Direct Sunlight

Thursday, June 18, 2015

One of the first things you learn when you're into photography is that it's best not to photograph anything in direct light. The bright light will wash anything out like bleach in a color cycle, and the shadows it casts often overwhelm everything. However, sometimes it's fun to break the rules and do what you're not supposed to, so that's what I did for these photos. Thank goodness my new camera has a higher max shutter speed, because that allows me to avoid overexposure while keeping a nice shallow depth of field. I actually really like the drama of the shadows in these shots, which reminds me that it's always ok to break the photography rules now and again.

I feel so bad about falling so behind with my blog lately. Things have been so hectic! Graduating from college, preparing to move, job hunting, hanging out with as many people as possible before I go....it's a lot to juggle! Plus I just photographed my friend Sierra's wedding (check it here), so I figured y'all would understand if I took a short leave of absence. Please know I'm still reading all your comments and should be back from here on out! Woo! I've missed you guys.

  1. Oh man, yes; I saw a photographer at a park once directing clients to lay in the grass in FULL sunlight in the middle of the day even though two steps away there was a nice big spot of filtered light through trees, and I was just like ... dude, these people are paying you to take their pictures, WHAT ARE YOU DOING.
But, I think it's true what you said; sometimes it's okay to break the rules! I think these turned out great, and you obviously know how to work the harsh lighting to your advantage! I love the way these pictures look!

And the way you knotted up your dress is so pretty. I love when people add little details like that to elevate a garment a little!

    1. I am on the same level as you! Whenever I see photographers doing that I am just like, "Bro! No!" But then I feel rude for being judgemental lol
Thank you so much for the comment! Sorry it took me stupid long to respond, I'm apparently not getting emails for comments any longer

  2. I think these pictures turned out nice even in the direct lighting. You made it work and I'm loving your dress here too. Such a pretty summer look.
